This is a must-have kit for filmmakers, directors of photography, run-and-gun shooters, gaffers, and cinematographers. The Book Light Kit was developed by Westcott in partnership with Jem Schofield, founder and host of the popular filmmaking educational site theC47.

In this video, Jem discusses 5 of his favorite and most practical ways of lighting scenes with the Book Light Kit. Check them out in detail below!

Bounce and Diffuse Simultaneously

Here, Jem uses the standard book light setup with a Original Flex 1' x 2' LED Mat. This freestanding light modifier bounces and diffuses your preferred light source simultaneously, creating a very soft and flattering output. Jem uses the book light as his key light source. He also brings in a reflector to bounce some of the light back onto his subject to fill in shadows on her face.

Additionally, Jem uses a Ice Light 2 Daylight LED as a hair light placed just above and behind his subject for separation. A gelled is also utilized in this shot to accent the barrel in the background.

Add Shadows

The Book Light Kit’s 4×6 Scrim Jim Cine frames and fabrics can be used separately. Here, Jem utilizes the black side of the included reversible 4×6 muslin fabric to add shadows. He attaches this fabric to a single 4×6 frame and mounts it vertically. This adds full-body negative fill. on his subject and helps balance the natural lighting.

Bounce Light

As mentioned above, the Book Light Kit’s 4×6 frames and fabrics can be used separately. Here, Jem utilizes a 4×6 frame with the included reversible silver and white fabric to bounce light from his Original Flex 1' x 2' LED Mat onto his subject. By bouncing the light, he creates a much more soft and appealing output.

Additionally, Jem places a Original Flex 1' x 1' X-Bracket Set far behind his subject as a hair light for separation.

Diffuse Light

Again utilizing just a single 4×6 frame, Jem creates a simple overhead setup. He attaches the included diffusion fabric to the frame and mounts this above his subject with his 1×2 Flex. This creates a soft, beauty-style lighting.

Additionally, Jem uses two 1×1 Flex in the background – one as a hair light and one as a accent light to illuminate chalk board in the shot.

Cut Light

Both of the 4×6 Scrim Jim Cine frames included in theC47 Scrim Jim Cine Book Light Kit can be fully disassembled. These frame pieces can then be reassembled into different frame sizes. Here, Jem uses the frame pieces to build an 6×6 frame. He attaches a Scrim Jim Cine Double Net Fabric (6' x 6') (sold separately) to the frame and uses it behind his subject, in front of a large window, eliminating a blown-out background.
