Roger Ridpath, a commercial and portrait photographer based in Kansas City, made this Real Deal Review after Westcott sent him an Apollo Strip. During this video, Roger illustrates step-by-step how to set up the Apollo Strip. The Westcott Apollo line of softboxes are built on a umbrella-style frame, making set-up and tear down quick and easy. Fitting easily into any standard umbrella receptacle, Roger was able to use his own stand and speedlight for this shoot, without the need of additional hardware. Roger also comments on the recessed edge featured on this Apollo softbox, which provides the ultimate light control.
During this video, Roger demonstrates the variety of lighting effects he can achieve with the Apollo Strip. He first shows, with final images, the portrait lighting he gained with just the use of the unmodified Apollo Strip. Then, Roger adds the 40-Degree Grid onto the softbox and shares this portrait. He also demonstrates lighting effects with the included diffusion panel and with the Apollo Strip rotated. The Apollo Strip features mounting options of either vertical or horizontal for extreme flexibility.
The Apollo Strip measures 16″ by 30″ and gives off a rectangular catch light in the subject’s eyes. Most photographers utilize strip lights from the side to as a fill light, hair light, or a kicker light. However, this softbox is versatile enough to be used as your main source of light as well.
