Underexposing the Sky for Dramatic Portraits

Kentucky sports and senior portrait photographer Matt Hernandez is known for capturing dramatic senior portraits with relatively simple lighting setups. To emphasize the drama in these shots, Matt typically shoots wide-angle while underexposing the sky. By underexposing the sky, Matt is able to emphasize the clouds and colors behind his subject.

When underexposing the sky or backdrop, artificial lighting is necessary to properly expose the subject. For this shoot, Matt places his subject in the shade to limit her squinting due to the harsh sunlight. He then uses two strobes to light her.

His first strobe is acting as the key light. This light is softened and directed with Rapid Box XL. This light source is placed to the front right of his subject.

The second strobe is placed slightly behind his subject. This light is acting as a kicker light to help create separation between his subject’s dark clothing and the underexposed background. This kicker light is precise directed with a 12 x 36-inch Pro Stripbank.
